Program:
An afternoon of festive music inspired by the carnival season, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Toronto. Listeners may enjoy an array of works by Italian and Latin American composers, from the traditional Carnival of Venice by Jeanjean, Adagio e Tarantella by Cavallini and La Danza by Rossini to the more unusual "Suite Italienne" from Stravinsky's ballet "Pulcinella". Hear daring transcriptions of Piazzolla, Mignone and Guarnieri as well as Italian and world music on accordion.

Pavel Markelov (clarinetist, conductor, composer, arranger) holds a Ph.D. in performance from the P. Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Music in Moscow. He is the first-prize winner of the Russian National Competition in clarinet, and obtained a second prize in conducting.
A remarkably versatile musician, Pavel commands a vast repertoire spanning the classical, folk, contemporary and jazz styles. His ten-year concert career has taken him to the foremost venues of Western Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Canada and Asia, in performances with renowned symphony orchestras and chamber groups, including the legendary Borodin Quartet. As an arranger, Pavel has enriched the standard clarinet repertoire through his unique arrangements for clarinet and piano as well as for various ensembles, ranging from the classical masterpieces to the more daring, innovative transcriptions of works by American and Latin composers. He can be heard on the CD "Soul of Brazil."

Corey Lyle Gemmell (violinist) is a native of Hamilton, Ontario. He has distinguished himself as a soloist and chamber musician with performances in Canada, Germany, the United States and China. Concerto appearances include performances of the Brahms Violin Concerto, the Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello, the Beethoven Violin Concerto and Mozetich's Affairs of the Heart for Violin and Orchestra. In the 2007-2008 season Mr. Gemmell performed the Sibelius and Beethoven Violin Concertos. He will be performing the Beethoven Triple Concerto with Symphony Hamilton Orchestra as well as Vaughn Williams' The Lark Ascending with the York Symphony Orchestra in 2008-2009. He will be concertmaster for The Sound of Music at the Princess of Wales opening in fall 2008. As an active chamber musician Mr. Gemmell performs in numerous festivals and recitals each season.
At present Mr. Gemmell is concertmaster of Symphony Hamilton Orchestra, the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra and associate concertmaster of the Toronto Philharmonia. He is also associate concertmaster of the Esprit Orchestra, and a member of the Mississauga Sinfonietta, toneART Ensemble, Ergo Ensemble and the Elgin String Quartet. He also performs with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra and the National Ballet Orchestra.
Mr. Gemmell can be heard on compact disc in recordings of sonatas by Brahms, Ravel, Robert A. Baker, David Eagle and Hope Lee in collaboration with such artists as Danielle Cumming, David Hetherington, Fujiko Imajishi, and Kathryn Tremills.
As an adjudicator Mr. Gemmell makes appearances at numerous music festivals across Canada and he has sat on several juries at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.
He is on faculty of the Royal Conservatory of Music, the National Music Camp, and the Mississauga Youth Orchestra Summer Workshop and is a member of the Royal College of Examiners. |

John Lettieri (accordionist) is a music educator and department head of arts at St. Elizabeth Catholic High School, located in Thornhill, Ontario. In his teaching, he has explored band music, vocal music and new technology connections. His major instrument of choice is the accordion, however he does play the piano and other musical instruments. In addition to teaching, John is a very active musician. In March, 2004, John participated as a performer in the Canadian Music Week. He has performed at the Beaches International Jazz Festival held in Downtown Toronto, July 2005. In August 2006, John was invited to perform in the Ashkenaz festival, held at the Harbourfront Centre. In August 2007, John performed at the Niagara International Chamber Festival. In September 2007, John was awarded first place in the National Roland Digital Accordion festival, and as a result, in November of the same year, represented Canada at the first International Roland Digital festival held in Pessaro, Italy. In September 2008, John was invited to Montmagny, Quebec to demonstrate for Roland Canada at the International Accordion Festival held there each year. During his interesting career, John has performed music locally with many talented artists such as Robert Michaels, Nick Cuda, and David Buchbinder, and at a variety of celebrations and venues both as a soloist and in small ensemble musical projects. Also, he has recorded with several artists on numerous compact disc recordings, and has been invited to record music for film and television. John also plays the church organ at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, Woodbridge, on Sunday mornings for the past eight years. |
